Va. Tech president testifies: 'I tried my best'Virginia Tech president defends actions during 2007 campus shootings, said 'did my best'
CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (AP) ' Virginia Tech's president is defending his actions during the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history, saying "I tried my best."
President Charles Steger testified Friday at a wrongful death trial brought by the families of two students killed during the April 16, 2007, campus attack. Thirty-three people including the gunman died.
The civil suit claims university officials delayed warning the campus of the initial two shootings at a dormitory and then attempted to cover up their missteps.
Asked by an attorney for the parents if he erred by not alerting the campus to the earlier shootings, Steger disagreed. He said officials did the best they could with the information they had that day.
